Martin Scorsese directed a wide variety of short films during his time as a film student at New York University, many of which are easily accessible for viewing on the Internet, but his most notable short might be this 15-minute comedy from 1964 called It’s Not Just You, Murray!. Quite simply, this is the first Scorsese project featuring a lead character who is a gangster and makes for an interesting precursor to such classics as Mean Streets and Goodfellas. This also marks the acting debut of the director’s mother, Catherine Scorsese, who agreed to play the role of the gangster’s mother as a favour to her son. This would not be the last she would play a role like that in one of his films.
