They like to get the landmarks.

Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Independence Day was never my favourite movie, but when it first came out, I’ll admit, I watched the hell out of it. I seem to remember it being a fairly big VHS release, and everybody got it for Christmas the year it came out on video. Now, when I first heard that Independence Day was getting a belated sequel 20 years later, I rolled my eyes. “What’s the point?” I asked myself, thinking about how seeing huge landmarks explode has become a really stale disaster movie trope. But then I started watching trailers for Independence Day: Resurgence and, despite Will Smith’s absence…this actually looks kinda fun. I hate myself for saying it, but I think this could actually be a good time. Whereas the first one leaned more heavily on its action than its sci-fi elements, this sequel has gone way off the deep end into science fiction. I don’t think this will be a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, but…damnit, I’m going to watch it. It looks so ridiculous that I can’t say no.

Independence Day: Resurgence comes out June 24, 2016.
