I suggest you play the game…

Two estranged brothers reunite at their missing father’s video store to liquidate the property and sell off his assets. As they dig through the store, they find a VCR board game dubbed ‘Beyond The Gates’ that holds a connection to their father’s disappearance and deadly consequences for anyone who plays it.

I’m not posting this trailer for Beyond the Gates because I think it will be a good movie – the production quality of the title card alone is enough to tell me it won’t be.  But how could I resist posting about a movie that’s a cross between Jumanji, The Ring and that old VHS horror board game NightmareNightmare was a huge part of my childhood, and one of my formative forays into the horror genre. Just scary enough to give a 10-year-old me bad dreams for a week, but not so scary as to traumatize me. If you’ve never played Nightmare, I highly recommend it. The whole video portion is on Youtube, so you don’t even need a VCR anymore. As for Beyond the Gates, I fully intend to watch it, since it’s so clearly a love letter to the VHS format, but the forecast isn’t good.

Beyond the Gates comes out December 2016.
