Hopefully the fantasy literature community won’t skewer me for this, but I must admit I had no clue what A Game of Thrones was until this morning when my girlfriend sent me this clip. For those of you who, like me, aren’t exactly in the know, A Game of Thrones is a series of fantasy novels written by George R. R. Martin which, according to Wikipedia, “chronicles the violent dynastic struggles among noble families for control of the Iron Throne of Westeros.” Fantasy, swords and politics all wrapped up in one package? Sounds good to me! In case you hadn’t gathered from the clip above, HBO is adapting the series of novels into a television series, and while the teaser looks pretty generic, with its armoured, bearded dudes and flying raven, Martin seems pretty pleased about it, saying:
“There was this incredible moment of ‘My God, they got it right.’ There it is. The majority of my fans are going to be very happy, because they’re going to see the story that I told come alive, played by some fantastic actors.”
A Game of Thrones, the series, is set to debut in the spring of 2011.
