Well here’s a big surprise. George Lucas, the master of kicking a dead horse or, in this case, milking a dead cow, has decided to give the Star Wars films a full 3D conversion for a theatrical re-release in 2012. A recent statement from Lucasfilm has the following to say:

There are few movies that lend themselves more perfectly to 3D; from the Death Star trench run to the Tatooine Podrace, the ‘Star Wars Saga’ has always delivered an entertainment experience that is completely immersive.

Yeah, I guess so. I don’t know. In my experience, post-converted 3D just doesn’t look very good. Either it’s too subtle to even be noticeable, or it’s so offensive that you don’t notice anything else. But as I said before, George Lucas really knows how to suck all the money he possibly can out of his big franchise, and this seems like a pretty natural next step for it. Before it happens, though, rest assured that we’ll get at least five new editions of the original trilogy to tide us over.
