Doris Roberts has been in the acting business since the ’50s, and has over 100 credits to her name. It is one role, however, that I wish to address. That role is Marie Barone on “Everybody Loves Raymond”. Say what you will about the show, but you cannot deny how brilliant she actually was as Ray Romano’s mother. She had a certain sweet Southern innocence mixed with an underlying sneaky, snobbish side. In the delivery of one line of dialogue, she could make you go from feeling envious to furious. And I couldn’t think of anyone else who would have been as effective as she was at bickering back and forth with Peter Boyle.
