Since we just recorded a Shouts From the Back Row podcast on our favourite character actors, a.k.a. “That Guys”, “Before They Were Stars” will temporarily be changing its name to “Before They Were ‘That Guys'” this week, in order to showcase how some of our most prominent character actors started their careers. Anyway, it goes without saying that one of the Back Row’s favourite “That Guys” is J.K. Simmons, who started out his career by taking numerous bit parts and small roles in films and television shows before his memorable turns as Vern Schillinger on Oz and J. Jonah Jameson in the Spider-Man films helped make him one of the most prominent character actors working today. This particular J.K. Simmons bit part is from a kids show called The Adventures of Pete & Pete, which aired on Nickelodeon during the mid-nineties and focused on the quirky offbeat adventures of two redheaded brothers named Pete. This clip is from the final episode in the series and at the 2:25 mark, you can see J.K. make a brief appearance as a barber named Silent Dan.
