Saw IV
Considering this is part four of a series, I’ve got to admit, I was pretty impressed. Even though it ended on a big cliffhanger, fans of the franchise (like myself) will get everything they want from this movie: gruesome torture devices, devilish booby traps, and Tobin Bell, creepy as ever.

A Serbian Film
A Serbian Film is so shocking, disgusting and gratuitous that as I watched it, I found myself wondering if all the repulsive sex torture was in the service of a message, or if it was just sick for the sake of being sick. The answer is probably a combination of the two things, but that doesn’t matter, because I can’t recommend that you watch this movie. Even I, a jaded horror buff, had trouble sitting through it. Not entirely because of how twisted it is, but because after a while the grotesqueries begin to drag. It’s not a badly-made film at all, and the gore effects are good enough to get me squirming, but you can only watch so much torture before you begin to feel like the victim.

The Last Exorcism
While I’m a fan of the “documentary horror” genre, The Last Exorcism succeeds as much as it fails, and because one of the failures is a lackluster ending, you’re left feeling dissatisfied rather than creeped out. The exorcism scene in the middle of the movie is great stuff, but after that, the film just peters out into mediocrity. It’s creepy at times, but it just didn’t quite work for me.
