With the BluRay releases of Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, Agent Coulson (played by Clark Gregg) is getting more time in the spotlight than usual, as Marvel has released two “one-shot” short films starring Coulson himself (well, one short and one teaser for a short) – titled The Consultant and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Thor’s Hammer. What’s neat about these is that they give us some brief insight into Coulson’s character when he’s not interacting directly with superheroes, but also that these shorts precede the films whose DVDs include them. Did that make sense? The Consultant serves as a prequel to the scene after the end credits of The Incredible Hulk, and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To Thor’s Hammer takes place before the events of Thor.

Now, I’ve gotta say, I love these little shorts, but by giving us a bit more insight into his character they’re putting Coulson in a prime position to be offed by Joss Whedon in The Avengers. Now, Clark Gregg has done what he can to dismiss the rumours, but Whedon’s got a penchant for making us love characters only so he can kill them. Do you think that’s what will happen to Coulson in The Avengers? Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised.
