I’m sure most people know about Laurence Fishburne’s famous early role as Clean in Apocalypse Now, but his actual film debut was made at the age of 14 in a film with one of the more unusual titles of all time: Cornbread, Earl and Me. Fishburne plays the “Me” of the title, who idolizes a local basketball star from his urban neighbourhood nicknamed “Cornbread”. As you can see from this clip, Cornbread is so cool that he even gets his own theme song! The storyline involves Cornbread being mistakenly shot by some crooked white cops and even thought the film is well-intentioned, it is kinda hard not to laugh when the big dramatic moment involves young Fishburne screaming: “They killed Cornbread!”
