Gretchen Mol started her career as a model and stage actress after being discovered as a hat check girl at Michael’s Restaurant in New York. Her transition into the worlds of film and television was quick, with early roles in Spike Lee’s film Girl 6, Donnie Brasco, The Thirteenth Floor and Rounders, and the TV show Spin City. Mol was on the cover of Vanity Fair and declared the “It Girl of the Nineties”, but unfortunately her films didn’t do well at the box office. It was a slow rise to success for Mol, but after garnering some acclaim for her starring role in The Notorious Bettie Page, Mol began to find more success in her acting work, with 3:10 to Yuma also proving to be a hit with critics. Now she has a regular role on Boardwalk Empire, and she’s really something. Gretchen Mol turns 39 today.
