I think it’s about time that somebody had some words with Tarsem Singh. And unfortunately, it has come down to me.
Tarsem, dude, what are you doing? Look, we understand that there was a lot of studio pressure with The Cell – you were still a pretty green director, and while you had the chops to make an amazing film, the script and J-Lo didn’t work in your favour. Then you made The Fall, which I rank among the greatest movies ever made. The way you used practical effects, interesting locations, and unique filming techniques helped you to make a movie that showcased everything I love about cinema. I haven’t seen The Immortals yet, so I can’t comment on it, but this trailer for Mirror, Mirror looks…problematic. And it makes me question whether or not the The Fall was just an accident. You need to get back on track, and fast, man. Especially now that I’m hearing you want to make a Samurai Jack movie. You could totally pull that off! But if this trailer is any indication, well, I predict that Mirror, Mirror will be to Tarsem as The Brothers Grimm is to Terry Gilliam.
Mirror, Mirror looks like the antithesis of next year’s Snow White and the Huntsman (who knew that Snow White would be a big box office draw in 2012? Maybe the world really is coming to an end…), and I never thought I’d say this, but I’m looking forward to a Kristen Stewart movie more than a Tarsem film. Yeesh! When I said of the Snow White and the Huntsman trailer that it didn’t feature enough dwarves, I didn’t mean these kinds of dwarves!
Mirror, Mirror comes out March 16, 2012.
