Japanese filmmaker Takashi Shimizu, director of both the original and the remake of The Grudge, is making his first foray into the world of strictly English-language filmmaking with 7500 – a horror/thriller about a supernatural force that torments people on a plane and may or may not be the result of some jerk leaving his cell phone on during the flight. I like some of the ideas here: movies about being trapped on a plane are thrilling, ghosts are creepy, so ghosts on a plane could be pretty neat, but watching the preview, I can’t help but feel like this is just The Grudge on a 747. The way the ghosts pop out of spaces too small for a human being is very reminiscent of Shimizu’s previous and most famous ghost flicks, and, well, I wonder if he has any new tricks in store for us with this one, or if the scares will be the same as they were in The Grudge and Ju-on. Guess there’s only one way to find out! Regardless of its similarities to Shimizu’s other movies, I’ll probably see this one. What do you think?
7500 comes out August 31, 2012.
