Fairuza Balk was born in 1974 to a founding member of the psychedelic rock group Kaleidoscope and a teacher of ethnic and traditional dance forms. The family moved to Vancouver when Balk was young, and it was there that she began acting at the age of six. Her first film role was the 1985 sequel Return to Oz, which has lately become a bit of a cult hit. Other notable credits on Balk’s resume include The Worst Witch, Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead, The Craft, The Island of Dr. Moreau, American History X, The Waterboy, Almost Famous, The Sopranos, and The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans. And in case you were wondering, Fairuza Balk really is just as weird and vaguely gothy as the characters she plays – she owned an occult store in Hollywood for six years! She turns 38 today.
