Mel Smith began his career as a stage actor and comedian, and made the transition to film acting with the wonderfully named role of “Disco Doorman” in the 1979 film Bloody Kids. Shortly thereafter, Smith began working in television and appeared on such shows as The Goodies, Muck and Brass, and Not the Nine O’Clock News. Other films featuring Smith include Slayground, Morons from Outer Space, European Vacation, Brain Donors, Allegiance, Twelfth Night and My Angel, and he has also appeared on the TV series Hustle, Rock & Chips, and Consenting Adults. But for a child of the 80s like me, Mel Smith will always be the albino in The Princess Bride. Don’t even think about trying to escape. Mel Smith turns 61 today.
