During the 1950s and 60s, one of the most popular female characters in all of pop culture was Gidget, an upbeat Malibu teenager who appeared in numerous novels and movies. In 1965, a young Sally Field got her first big break when she was cast in the title role of the television adaptation of Gidget, but the series only lasted one season. However, a teenage Richard Dreyfuss had one of his earliest roles on an episode of the show, playing a nerdy character named “Durf the Drag”, whom Gidget takes pity on.
