In 2003, Pepsi attempted a promotion called the “Billion Dollar Giveaway” where people could buy Pepsi products and earn the chance to appear on a live television special for the opportunity to win a $1 billion prize. Of course, no one actually won the big prize and since Pepsi did not actually want to give away $1 billion, they paid $10 million to an insurance company in the event they should need someone to cover the possible windfall. As a whole, the promotion was pretty pointless, but did provide an early job for John Krasinski, who appeared in one of Pepsi’s “Billion Dollar Giveaway” commercials.
