I’m going to be honest here: I have no investment in Josh Trank’s reboot of Fantastic Four. These heroes have never been among my favourites, and while I liked Trank’s first film Chronicle quite a bit, I’ve always felt like writer Max Landis had just as big a hand in making that film interesting. Plus, just about every superhero film that isn’t coming from Marvel Studios these days smacks a bit of desperation, as though other studios are trying to remind people that they can do cool superhero stuff too.
Then there were rumours that Trank was proving extremely difficult to work with, that the movie was so bad that Marvel cancelled the comic line it was based on, and all other manner of scandal. But ultimately, none of it has really mattered to me. I look at this trailer, and I’ve gotta say, it looks worlds better than the previous Fantastic Four movies. It also has the look of something like Man of Steel – joyless and gritty just for the sake of being gritty. So will it be any good? I give it a solid…”maybe.”
Fantastic Four comes out August 7, 2015.
