Aww man, I was kind of looking forward to this one, but this trailer really fouls it all up, because it reveals that they’re using a prophecy as a plot device. I’m so sick of prophecies being shoehorned into new adaptations of classic stories. They did it in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, and if I recall correctly they did it in Oz the Great and Powerful too. Ugh. It’s lazy storytelling. There are some cases where it can work, if a prophecy was intended to be part of the story from the beginning (for example, I have no problem with Harry Potter), but the charm of Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland wasn’t that those characters were “the chosen one.” It was in the fact that they were just regular kids, and by making regular children the heroes of your stories, you’re telling other, real-life regular kids that they can be heroes too. But not everyone is the chosen one from some prophecy, and in my mind, turning Peter Pan into that kind of character really kills the appeal. Sigh.
Pan comes out October 9, 2015.
