It’s not uncommon for famous comedy figures to start off their careers as writers for famous comedy shows and sometimes pop up as a bit player in sketches. Hell, that’s how Conan O’Brien got started on Saturday Night Live. Another example of this is Will Forte, who got a gig on the writing staff of the Late Show with David Letterman in 1997. During his very first week on the job, Forte was asked to participate in a sketch called “Everything’s Funnier When Someone Gets Hurt” and had the distinct honour of stabbing some scissors through David Letterman’s hand.
