Before They Were Stars: Alec Baldwin on “Late Night with David Letterman” in 1982

This is likely Alec Baldwin’s first appearance on a major TV talk show, but it’s under very unusual circumstances. Baldwin’s first major acting job was playing a regular character on the soap opera, The Doctors, until he was killed off in 1982. While Baldwin was a semi-recognizable face, he was hardly an A-list actor at the time, so when he appeared on Late Night with David Letterman the first year it was in the air, it was not as a guest. At the 8:45 mark, Baldwin comes out for a comedy sketch where he expresses intense bitterness over his soap opera character being killed off. The embittered Baldwin even pops up for another sketch at the very end, following guest appearances from the likes of Andy Kaufman and Dr. Ruth! What a strange lineup!
