I challenge you to find some more obscure characters who got their own spin-off movie than Broom and Kopek from It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time. Yes, I’m sure you probably have no idea what I’m talking about, so here’s an explanation: It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time was a 1975 Canadian screwball comedy about a botched kidnapping scheme starring Anthony Newley and Isaac Hayes. Two of the supporting characters were a pair of bumbling cops named Broom and Kopek, played by Lawrence Dane and a young, unknown comedic actor named John Candy. For God-knows-what-reason, Broom and Kopek returned the following year in Find the Lady, another screwball comedy about a botched kidnapping scheme, but this time, they were the lead characters. So Find the Lady is technically John Candy’s first starring role. Both these films are available in their entirety on Youtube, so if you’re a John Candy completist, I guess today’s your lucky day!
