After his career is destroyed, a brilliant but arrogant and conceited surgeon gets a new lease on life when a sorcerer takes him under his wing and trains him to defend the world against evil.
I’d like to start off by saying that there’s really nothing wrong with this trailer for Doctor Strange. It looks pretty different than what we’re accustomed to with Marvel movies, Benedict Cumberbatch looks solid in the lead role (his accent isn’t great, however), and Tilda Swinton looks just as awesome as ever. But damn, are its influences ever obvious. Doctor Strange is basically Batman Begins meets Inception by way of The Matrix, and maybe it will work as a pastiche, but I was hoping that I’d come away from this preview a little more excited. Instead, I just want to go watch Batman Begins, Inception, and The Matrix. Also, those three movies are all pretty darn good. Can Doctor Strange really top all of them? That being said, I really liked Scott Derrickson’s and C. Robert Cargill’s work on Sinister, so maybe this will turn out to be awesome. But come on, they even use the foldy Inception city!
Doctor Strange comes out November 4, 2016.
