The Silver Chalice is a 1954 historical epic which would be completely forgettable if it didn’t happen to feature the screen debut of an aspiring young actor named Paul Newman. But the film is also notable for how much Newman openly despised it, as he frequently called it the worst movie ever made. In fact, during the 1960s, The Silver Chalice was set to air for an entire week on a Los Angeles television station, so Newman actually paid for a full-page newspaper ad which read: “Paul Newman apologizes for every night this week-Channel 9”. Of course, this only made viewers curious and the ratings for The Silver Chalice wound up being much higher than normal.
