Here’s a strange vanity project that perfectly represents the 1980s: in 1986, Don Johnson was at the height of his popularity and released a music album entitled Heartbeat, but the ego trip didn’t end there. He also released a VHS tape of the same name which featured all the songs on the album combined into a one-hour musical movie featuring Johnson as a documentary filmmaker (with Paul Shaffer as his assistant!) who gets himself into all sorts of wacky adventures. At one point, he encounters a gang led by a young Giancarlo Esposito, who had already done some guest appearances on a couple episodes of Miami Vice at this point. Esposito also makes an appearance in this music video for the title track, “Heartbeat”, in case you haven’t yet got your fill of Don Johnson singing yet.
