Before They Were Stars: Tobey Maguire in “Tales from the Whoop: Hot Rod Brown Class Clown”

During a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Tobey Maguire had a clip feasted upon him of his first starring role: an ultra-obscure 1990 Nickelodeon movie called Tales from the Whoop: Hot Rod Brown Class Clown. The “Whoop” in the title refers to Whoopi Goldberg, who plays a guardian angel sent down to straighten out young Tobey, who plays a misbehaving student named Hot Rod Brown. And of course, as the title implies, his misbehaviour consists of “incessant clowning” in school. But not to worry, he changes his ways after Whoopi shows him a vision of his future where he is given an award by the President of the United States, who happens to be a black woman and still refers to him as “Hot Rod” Brown during a press conference.
